As a marketing consultant, I specialize in figuring out why people make buying decisions. When I go through the mall, I like to look at the shops through the eyes of a marketing consultant. Although a good looking window display might catch my eye, the places that capture my money are typically those that help me solve my shopping dilemma. For example, I have crappy feet – too wide, with a desperate need for extra arch support. This means it takes me a long time to find a pair that fits and I usually have to pay more for less attractive shoes. So when I see a good looking shoe in the store window, I generally go in to see if it comes in wide with and has arch support, try it on, and leave cursing my feet! However, in stores where I tell the salesperson my requirements and actually get help finding shoes that work within them, I am 50% more likely to make a purchase on the spot. That rate would probably be higher if comfy shoes weren’t so ugly and expensive.
Now, let’s see how this translates into websites. Many websites put on a “display window” but don’t have a system to engage their visitors. This system is similar to a sales consultant (as opposed to a sales person) in that he is interested in learning more about your needs, finding a solution that fits those leads, and continuing the conversation with you throughout the process. These people make a sales because they truly help prospects fulfill their needs and desires. And they do it in a way that adds value rather than irritates the client.
The reason so few websites do this is because coordinating all necessary processes into an easy to use and affordable sale consulting system is challenging. This requires an understanding of your website visitors and the path they take between the time they first hear of you till the point at which they become clients. Here at Aldeia, we’ve helped clients walk through the tasks necessary to put this together. But up until now, all we’ve been able to do is provide a plan – our clients were tasked with executing those plans. Unfortunately, setting up a cohesive lead generation, nurturing, and conversion system is time consuming and requires specialized expertise.
